The devolution of our modern political discourse

Time was when a conservative was an engaged citizen of the U.S. who believed (strongly believed) that taking care of the widows and orphans, feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, staying out of European, African and Asian wars while simultaneously cleaving on to the things from the past that unite and bring together peoples of disparate socio-economic, faith tradition, and geographical backgrounds.

FDR was a conservative in this regard.

George Bush was not - (and President Dick Cheney couldn't even conceive of being one).
