Just asking some more questions.
How long has this type of creative essay writing task been part of the program?
How many other students have been arrested and charged with disturbing the peade for writing a "troubling" essay?
Why were there strictures against threatening specific individuals of discussing self-inflicted violence?
What actions, if any, in the past have been taken on students whose writing pointed to possible problems with voilence?
Perhaps future such assignments must be modified with the caveats that:
"You are to use no graphic examples of violence or murder or sex. While we understand that such topics fascinate certain segments of the teen-aged population, this is a CREATIVE writing class, and if you can't be more creative than to write about violence, murder and sex, then you don't belong in this class in the first place. Use of graphic examples of violence of murder or sex might subject you to criminal sanctions and result in your being arrested and not permitted to return to school."
I'm more and more inclined to believe that the teacher is an idiot, the department head a coward, the principal a Pontius Pilate, the chief of police an idiot, and States Attorney a political opportunist. Fire them all or vote their asses out of office.
